Are you experiencing Acute or Chronic Pain?
In life, pain happens…injuries happen. These are normal parts of the human experience. However, living and moving in chronic pain is not normal and certainly not considered an inevitable outcome of living your life to the fullest!
So, what exactly is Acute Pain Versus Chronic Pain?
According to the Merriman Webster Dictionary
- Acute (1) characterized by sharpness or severity acute pain (2) having a sudden onset, sharp rise, felt, perceived or experienced intensely lasting a short time.
- Chronic (1) continuing or occurring again and again for a long time (2) always present or encountered; constantly vexing, weakening, or troubling
Of the two, acute pain can be the most intense initially and often occurs at the onset of an injury and typically does not last long. However, an injury or acute pain can be the beginning of a chronic pain condition, that can last for months, years or a lifetime, if not treated or cared for properly.
The human body has an inordinate ability to heal from many different kinds of injuries, whether it be work related, (e.g. RSI’s), sports-related (e.g. tennis elbow) or simply a part of daily living (e.g. a slight stumble, a fall or even a strong sneeze or a cough). What appears to be just a minor injury can show up later down the road as acute and/or chronic pain and can often radiate into other parts of the body.
As humans, we tend to separate all the many parts of our bodies as though they are not related or work together. When we find ourselves with a repetitive injury from work, like Carpal Tunnel, we are often told that it is only from sitting at a computer for hours. This is a valid diagnosis, however, there could be more to this story than we are aware of. For example, a client experienced a Carpal Tunnel injury by repetitive computer use, but that injury was further exacerbated by weightlifting and having a poor rib cage position.
There are many ways in which injuries occur. Not all are as obvious as overtime at a computer or lifting a heavy box incorrectly. Some minor injuries can develop over time into chronic pain from something that happened years before. The trauma is stored in the muscles and tissues and later surfaces through repetitive movements, incorrect posture, lack of movement or exercise or even another seemingly unrelated trauma. For example, I have right knee issues whose root cause is playing soccer thirty-five years ago.
Other things to consider…
Throughout our lives, we intentionally and unintentionally create patterns of movement and posture that affect our health and ability to move. These patterns often contribute to misalignment of vertebrae, joints, muscles and soft tissues. We are often not aware of creating these habits and patterns that may ultimately compromise our body functioning at its best. These old habits or even new repetitive habits can often open the doorway for injury and chronic pain later down the road.
One of the remedies to healing or minimizing acute and chronic pain is to recognize that the body is not separated into estranged parts and the pain you have may be radiating from different problems in the body. The body does tend to create ways of protecting itself when there are injury and pain. This often includes scar tissue, contracted or over-stretched muscles, tissue inflammation, or stiff and achy joints. Often chronic body pain is a consequence of your body trying to protect itself from trauma, misuse, and/or overuse.
These are patterns in the body that developed over time. They can be present in everyday life or they can be activated through accidents or even “positive things” like working out.
Good massage and bodywork are about breaking down those old patterns, which allows you to you create new healthier patterns. Konea Massage is here to help you do just that!
Konea Massage has helped people recover from many types of accidents and injuries. We also work with chronic conditions such as fibromyalgia, neuropathy, Crohn’s disease, and many others. We work with pain and dysfunction from your head, shoulders, knees to your toes. We have developed and learned different techniques over the course of our 16 years of practice. It is our purpose to get you relief, address the roots of your issues and teach you ways to help yourself. We will work together as a team using your own innate knowledge of your body.
Since we are working on long-term goals, the work is often slower than what may be expected. This is because we are trying to effect change in your fascial network (your muscles are “embedded” in your fascia). We also ask for your participation in helping to find a better balance in your body. Your participation and movement are necessary in order to help your body release non-optimal movement patterns and retrain itself to a more relaxed optimum state. We may use a variety of positions while clothed such as seated or standing work. While disrobed or clothed on the table we may use side-lying, prone or supine positions. Of course, all work is done within your comfort levels.

“David is a miracle worker. I was a little hesitant to give him a great recommendation as I want to make sure I can still get on his calendar. I’ve seen him several times over the past several years and every time he has fixed a muscular-skeletal issue I could not get relief for any other way.”
M.L., extraordinary chef, yoga instructor and business woman
“David is a fantastic therapist. He is great at explaining the ‘whys’ of what your body is doing when things don’t feel right or are experiencing pain. Not only do I feel great after a treatment but I learn a lot about my own physiology. You won’t be disappointed!”
C.O., one of the funnier people you could meet and great tax/bookkeeping pro
“I found David through a friend on-island who is a massage therapist herself. I have injured my neck seriously 3 times, and it was in spasm–I could barely turn my head, and after one session with David my range of motion was hugely increased and the pain was down from 9/10 to 1/10. I scheduled a second session and my range of motion is even better–plus, my posture is improved, without any effort on my part.”
C.H., a kind compassionate nurse with a wicked sense of humour
